What counts as a word?
- Words are whitespace-separated pieces containing a letter or number. Repeated spaces, tabs and line breaks separate words.
- Contractions and hyphenated terms count as one word. Punctuation-only pieces and standalone emoji do not count as words.
- Chinese, Japanese and other writing without spaces stays one piece. This is a whitespace-based count, not a language-aware tokenizer.
How the other counts work
- Characters count Unicode code points, including whitespace. Some emoji and accented letters use multiple code points.
- Without whitespace excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences split at periods, question marks and exclamation marks, including 。!?. Abbreviations and decimal points can inflate this estimate.
- Paragraphs are nonempty blocks containing a letter or number, separated by blank lines. Single line breaks stay in the same paragraph.
- Reading time estimates 200 words per minute, rounded up to a whole second.
